SPC Flooring Projects: Order the Trims With the Floor
A flooring order can be ready for shipment while the project team is still deciding how to finish doorways, edges and stairs. The planks may be available, but the required trims have not been specified or approved.
For an SPC flooring project, accessories should be reviewed alongside the floor. They are part of the layout and supply plan, rather than an item to solve after the main order has been confirmed.
Mark the finishing locations
Use the project drawings to identify transitions, exposed edges, wall junctions and any stair details. Ask the project team which locations require a profile and what function each profile must perform.
Product names such as reducer, end-cap and T-molding should be tied to the actual required detail. Similar names do not establish that two profiles fit the same installation.
Check the profile against the system
Provide the supplier with the floor specification and the relevant project details. Review profile dimensions, fixing arrangements and other interfaces using the manufacturer's instructions and the project's requirements.
The installer should establish suitability for the proposed application. A colour-matched accessory does not, by itself, demonstrate that its dimensions or installation method are appropriate.
Approve the finish using physical references
Compare proposed trim samples with the approved flooring sample under suitable viewing conditions. Ask how the supplier describes the finish and which reference will be used for production.
An accessory may use a different construction or surface treatment from the plank. If the appearance will not be identical, establish what match has been approved rather than relying on a small online swatch.
Before approving the accessory list, check:
- Each profile has a product code and an intended location.
- The finish reference matches the agreed sample.
- Quantities refer to the current project drawings.
- The installation team has the relevant product instructions.
Keep quantities and versions together
Record each profile code, finish, length and quantity in the order. Confirm how it will be packed and identified so the site team can distinguish the pieces after delivery.
If the flooring design or project layout changes, review the accessory list again. Keep the approved versions aligned, especially where several finishes are supplied to one site.
A final purchasing check should include the people receiving and installing the materials. Can they identify where each profile belongs from the packing list and drawings? If that answer is unclear, resolve the detail before shipment. Planning the trims with the floor gives the project a complete set of specified materials and reduces the need to make finishing decisions around whatever happens to be available later.
